So in my continuation of recaps from the past 5 months or so, it's now time to recall Whitney's birthday. Our wonderful girl turned two years-old on January 10th.
Sadly, we weren't able to celebrate on her actual birthday because the big national critical care conference was in San Francisco and I had to go. One advantage of being up in SF though, was that we were able to visit with our good friends, The Greenbergs, on January 11th. It just so happened that their daughter, Alaina, was born on January 11th. They invited us to Alaina's first birthday celebration and Marla was so incredibly thoughtful so as in get a gluten-free brownie and include Whitney in the festivities.
"Thanks Auntie Marla!!"
Fast forward a week and so began the preparations for Whitney's birthday party. Now at the time a popular book in our house was A Gluten-Free Birthday for Me. For those who don't know, Whitney had a pretty significant wheat allergy. The easiest way for us to avoid wheat was to go "gluten-free." Whitney has become quite self-aware of her dietary limitation (in large part thanks to Cruz' fastidious overwatch). So we got that book from the library to help her understand why she needed a "gluten-free" cake. Part of the plot included the girl helping her mom make the cake. So naturally Whitney wanted to help me make hers!
Whitney is an excellent sous-chef.
She was a very good assistant and I have to say that the cake mix that I used actually made for quite a moist and delicious cake.
The Final Product
The party was the next day and quite a success. The weather cooperated and it was sunny and warm.
No, Cruz is not wearing Whitney's shirt from the day before.
January in California.
Our neighbor across the street let us borrow their little bouncy house and it was an instant success.
