Cruz celebrated his first Birthday last week with family and friends. His Lola and Lolo drove in from Vegas early and celebrated his birthday twice (on his actual Birthday of September 1st and his party). His Aunt Jen flew in from Brooklyn, bringing along with her the homemade birthday banner (many thanks!!) and his Aunt Rochelle and Uncle Brian flew in from Chicago. Also, in attendance, were Ethan (Cruz' former nanny share baby) and Carmen (Cruz' former nanny).
Mom was really nervous about how Cruz would do during the party because he missed his morning nap! He was a trooper though and had a great time playing with his friends and family.
Cruz' great aunt from Korea bought him a traditional Korean outfit for his birthday. In Korean culture, the first birthday is called the "tol". The first birthday is a major milestone since they used to have a high infant mortality rate. Besides sporting the cool outfit, Cruz also had to pick among some items that carried some symbolism for his future:
Dollar bill - wealth
Thread - long life
Ruler - talented with his hands
Pen - scholar
Cruz chose thread so he will live a long life. He then tried to pick up the ruler with his feet so now we say that he'll be good with his feet!
Happy first Birthday, Cruz!!
